Everyday cleaning
For a finished surface, a soft cloth and a little warm water are usually enough for daily cleaning. The aim is to lift dust and spills without soaking the wood or stripping the oil or wax. Strong solvents and abrasive pads can cut into a finish and leave the timber exposed, so they are best avoided for routine work.
- Wipe with a cloth that is damp, not wet, then dry the surface straight away.
- Deal with spills promptly so liquids do not sit on the surface.
- Test any new cleaning agent on a hidden spot before using it widely.
- Avoid leaving wet items, such as cloths or bottles, standing on bare wood.
Wooden kitchenware
Boards and utensils are usually cleaned by hand rather than in a dishwasher, where prolonged heat and water can cause cracking and raised grain. After washing, they are wiped and left to dry fully before being put away, and re-oiled from time to time as the surface dries out.
Managing moisture
Because wood takes up and gives off moisture with the surrounding air, large swings in indoor humidity put stress on it. In many German homes the air is dry during the winter heating season and more humid in summer. Keeping conditions reasonably steady reduces the movement that causes gaps and cracks.
- Keep pieces away from direct radiator heat and from cold, damp external walls.
- Use coasters, trivets and mats under hot or wet items on tabletops.
- Ventilate damp rooms such as kitchens so moisture does not settle on surfaces.
- Renew the oil or wax layer when water no longer beads and the surface looks dry.
Watermarks and rings
Light marks on a waxed or oiled surface can sometimes be eased by cleaning the area and reapplying the finish. Marks that have reached bare or stained wood may need local sanding and refinishing rather than cleaning alone.
Outdoor and exposed wood
Doors, frames and outdoor items face rain, sun and frost. These usually rely on a more durable exterior finish and on detailing that lets water run off rather than pool. The example below shows an exterior door treated with an oil-based finish.
